A Forecasting Platform Participant Earned $436,000 from Bets on Maduro's Downfall.
A trader profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from non-public details of American actions.
Changing Odds in Predictions
Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion increased in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the president had been seized.
A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Market Signals Before Announcement
Trading information shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet these probabilities had jumped to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the early hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in positions just before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," said an industry expert.
A handful of other traders also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A bill put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.
The Prediction Market Landscape
Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to political events.
The industry were examined under the last presidential term. Yet it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A company executive for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
