A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
